ELIZABETH WARREN WILL TAKE A STAND FOR US ALL!

One of Elizabeth Warren’s most moving speeches is highlighted in the Huffington Post, titled, “The Speech That Could Make Elizabeth Warren the Next President of the United States.” You can find this link by clicking here or by visiting: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/miles-mogulescu/the-speech-that-could-make-elizabeth-warren-president_b_6319142.html

In this speech, Elizabeth, once again, calls the government out for their mistakes and issues. Elizabeth is known to be very intense, blunt and determined. She really focuses, in this speech, on the well being of the middle class, the Wall Street bailouts and the Citi Group involvement issues.

Political Language
Elizabeth uses labeling as a political language strategy to tell her audience that the Wall Street bailouts are bad and no one likes them, by stating, “Democrats don't like Wall Street bailouts. Republicans don't like Wall Street bailouts. The American people are disgusted by Wall Street bailouts.” Elizabeth was successful in this use of political language because it gives us a negative viewpoint on the bailouts, which helps her case. This could also be considered a type of reinforcement because she gives preexisting beliefs to validate her opinion of the unhealthy use of bailouts. I don’t know too much about the details of the bailouts, but after I watched this part of her speech, I was already convinced that I hated the Wall Street bailouts as well.

One of the most moving quotes from her speech, in my opinion, is followed below:

“Washington already works really well for the billionaires and the big corporations and the lawyers and the lobbyists. But what about the families who lost their homes or their jobs or their retirement savings the last time Citigroup bet big on derivatives and lost? What about the families who are living paycheck to paycheck and saw their tax dollars go to bail out Citi just 6 years ago? We were sent here to fight for those families. It is time, it is past time, for Washington to start working for them!” - Elizabeth Warren

She also does a great job in properly showing the large financial stability that these "too big to fail" businesses have over most American individuals when she says, “Think about that kind of power. If a financial institution has become so big and so powerful that it can hold the entire country hostage. That alone is reason enough to break them up.”

Read Between the Lines
Elizabeth is not only focusing on the need to stop the bailouts for huge banks but also her constant fight to help the middle class. I think this is an underlying subject that Warren tries to include in many of her speeches and other mediated accounts. She begins closing her speech with quotes about protecting the families of the lower and middle class.

"What about the families who lost their homes or their jobs or their retirement savings?"
"What about the families who are living paycheck to paycheck and saw their tax dollars go to bail out Citi just 6 years ago?"
"We were sent here to fight for those families."

  1. What kind of appeals do you think Warren uses in her speech? How affective do you think her strategies were?

  2. You show that she makes it clear that she is against helping large corporations and is more for the people of the middle class; however, does she show how she will get this done better than previous administrations?

    1. I don't think the main focus of this speech was to lay out the plan but was to gain support for her ideas and opinions, what do you think Sarah?

    2. I agree Abby! I think because she has yet to announce her candidacy in the 2016 elections, she doesn't have to prove herself as a president but mainly as her current role as a senator for Massachusetts, which she has already proven herself at.

  3. It is interesting that you don't mention polarization. I think some think much of Warren's popularity is due to her polarizing qualities. I have often said she is the Ted Cruz of the left: academic, intelligent, extreme, hates her parties leadership and is hated by them, and often seeks attention. Would you agree with this assessment? (Not very many liberals concede the point, but a few have! Haha..)

  4. I do not think that Elizabeth is hated by the democratic party, it has even been stated that Democrats really support Warren even though she has said that she isn't running. It was even stated that the issues that Elizabeth covers and pushes for has helped the candidacy and set some standards for expectations of the candidacy.
